The Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) operates a pair of Rotterdam class
Landing Platform Dock (LPD) ships, supporting UN-led humanitarian
operations off the coast of Africa and NATO deployments near
Afghanistan. The LPD is generally employed as a transport ship for
amphibious operations because it has a sustained troop-carrying
capacity as well as the capability to embark, land, support and
re-embark personnel. The platform also has the ability to embark
helicopters; to support ASW and MCM operations; and to serve as a
control ship for amphibious task forces.
