The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is implementing the 29
recommendations made by the Submarine Workforce Sustainability
Review regarding the management of human and material resources.
Under its five-phase Submarine Sustainability Programme, which has
already completed the analysis stage, the RAN will set up three
sustainable crews of 58 personnel each, with a 35-strong Submarine
Support Group, by 2011. In the next stage, the service will a
achieve a fourth sustainable crew and a fully manned Submarine
Support Group. By 2015, the RAN will have evaluated alternative
crewing arrangements, and from 2015 onwards, the service will
implement work force expansion strategies and prepare for the
transition from the Collins class SSKs to the Future Submarine.
