The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is implementing the 29 recommendations made by the Submarine Workforce Sustainability Review regarding the management of human and material resources. Under its five-phase Submarine Sustainability Programme, which has already completed the analysis stage, the RAN will set up three sustainable crews of 58 personnel each, with a 35-strong Submarine Support Group, by 2011. In the next stage, the service will a achieve a fourth sustainable crew and a fully manned Submarine Support Group. By 2015, the RAN will have evaluated alternative crewing arrangements, and from 2015 onwards, the service will implement work force expansion strategies and prepare for the transition from the Collins class SSKs to the Future Submarine.
