As part of a US DoD Joint Technology Capability Demonstration
(JTCD), military forces will use the Internet Routing in Space
(IRIS) payload integrated aboard the commercial Intelsat IS-14
COMSAT to transmit video and other intelligence to the Joint
Interagency Task Force-South, a counter-narcotics unit that
cooperates with US allies in the Caribbean. The Army Space and
Missile Defense Command Future Warfare Center will evaluate the
technology's potential military applications. The router would
provide any user with an authorized Internet Protocol address and
IRIS-compatible modem with access to the videos; moreover, lag time
would be reduced by lessening the distance signals must travel.
