In 3/2010, the US Navy will decide whether to install the Distributed Common Ground/Surface System-Navy (DCGS-N) following two failed tests during the Empire Challenge maneuvers. However, the system successfully completed operational evaluation trials aboard a carrier in 9/2009. DCGS-N is part of the larger Distributed Common Ground/Surface network, which encompasses the Army and USAF and will soon include Special Operations Command and intelligence agencies. If the go-ahead is given, the Navy will integrate the system aboard nine carriers, two amphibious command ships and 10 amphibious attack ships, as well as nine ground sites, by 2013; destroyers and cruisers would be retrofitted during a follow-on phase. BAE Systems is among the bidders for the upgrade and installation contract.
