US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC), formerly known
as Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), headquartered in
Warren, Michigan, has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems,
Sterling Heights, Michigan, a $198 mil contract covering the
construction by the company of 140 M1A1 Abrams MBTs configured for
urban warfare. Modifications to the platforms include a
second-generation FLIR thermal sight, a driver's vision-enhancing
thermal viewer, and urban survivability improvements to supply
improved crew protection. Engines developed through the service's
Total Integrated Engine Revitalization program are to be installed
in the new MBTs.
