US Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC), formerly known as Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), headquartered in Warren, Michigan, has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems, Sterling Heights, Michigan, a $198 mil contract covering the construction by the company of 140 M1A1 Abrams MBTs configured for urban warfare. Modifications to the platforms include a second-generation FLIR thermal sight, a driver's vision-enhancing thermal viewer, and urban survivability improvements to supply improved crew protection. Engines developed through the service's Total Integrated Engine Revitalization program are to be installed in the new MBTs.
